Software, workflow automation, AI: in many digitalisation debates these three are treated as competing options you have to choose between. That's a fallacy. They aren't alternatives, they're building blocks that interlock. The core stays the tailored process solution; workflow automation and AI complement it where they deliver measurable value. When each building block applies, and why targeted use almost always beats piling on tools.
The core stays the custom process solution
At the start there's no tool, but the process. The custom software solution forms the core because it captures exactly what sets a company apart from the competition: its own logic in scheduling, quoting, production control, or a customer portal. These differentiating 20 percent can't sensibly be bought off the shelf without giving up the very advantage that makes them valuable.
Custom software today is rarely a full replacement for everything. Often it's the glue between existing standard systems: the layer that connects ERP, CRM, and shop floor, closes media breaks, and orchestrates the differentiating flow. It's precisely at these interfaces and handovers that the biggest ROI often sits, not in a single screen.
This core is the constant. Everything else, workflows and AI, complements it rather than replacing it.
